Indie and Old-School Games thread (was Age of Decadence)

Post by stage » 23 Mar 2012 23:33

at least some of you may know that i like old-school games
and stuff nes, DOSgames ala abandonia.com, flashgames etc
and indie games from independent developers unlike some big shity corportaion, to name one that start with E and ends with A as example, so Unlike this guy i only followed this game for about a year but looks really promising, so since am lazy just gona post his review and video

I've been following the development of indie studio Iron Tower Studio's "Age of Decadence" for several years now, and it's no exaggeration to say that it's one of the most promising hardcore PC RPGs in a long time. The game is nothing short of a Fallout-inspired isometric/turn-based RPG set in a rich pseudo-historical setting and built from the ground up to support player choice, with lots of non-combat skills which have a major impact on the overall gameplay experience. Interestingly, combat has intentionally been made the most difficult approach to finishing quests (rather than the default option, as in most RPGs), since you don't start out as a particularly capable warrior at all and going up against a numerically superior enemy is supposed to be as bad an idea in AoD as it is in real life...

The first Age of Decadence video on this channel was uploaded in 2008 (!), and even back then the project had been going on for quite some time. A short combat teaser was released a while back, but now all fans of serious RPGs have a great opportunity to finally check out a much larger and more refined chunk of the game (called "public beta" rather than demo), experiment with different character builds and experience how the chosen character class affects both the story and the gameplay options.

watching the video i has thoughts "hm, this game looks promising"
but then i watched this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... Qylp5WzPl0#!
this combat system looks really outdated, could work on some mobile phone game, but on pc ... me "dislike" .
however, i guess i will waste some time in Diablo III :) and for sure, this won't affect my aoc raiding attendance :)

that definitely reminds me of my old favourite games, BG, Planescape Torment, Fallout.
I'm unsure however I can be hyped by a game which doesn't seem to be doing anything else than what those games were doing in the past.

It's like, a 15 years old game released now, it's a weird concept :). Hopefully it will not require a heavy computer to run and it's something you'll be able to play with a 6 years old laptop, then yes it could be a good idea :).

Aouch. That hurt me badly.

Btw, can't find images of Godfall, am I blind or nothing released yet ?

And as we speak about minimalist/indie dungeon-flavored games we enjoy(ed), a couple I loved and played a lot :
- Dwarf Fortress : http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ (more management, less pure-dungeon-crawling)
These 2, definitely Rogue-like (tell me I'm not the only one that played the original Rogue)
- Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup : http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/
- Desktop Dungeon : http://www.desktopdungeons.net/ (holy shit, they did a very sexy design revamp, maybe I'm going to play it again)

Oh, and bonus, a picture well-known by DF players
